WHAT’S NEXT?
WHat is the SELECT Showcase?
The 2026 Select Showcase is our annual tryout to form our Spring travel season teams. We will be evaluating players based on skill level, basketball IQ, how do they perform in a fast paced environment, how do they receive coaching, and the most important, are they a good teammate. With the addition of our Tennessee Select UA teams, the showcase will serve as a dual tryout for everyone in the 2030, 2031, 2032, and 2033 class. Upon the completion of tryouts, the coaches will divide players into teams per class, starting with those that will participate on the UA teams and continue building strong teams after.
what is the difference between sumner select and tennessee select?
The only difference between Sumner Select Basketball and Tennessee Select Basketball is the idea that our Tennessee Select teams will compete on a higher stage, therefore we desired a name that will brand our program nationally. Both teams will practice at the same time, wear the same uniforms, participate in the same off court events, and still compete under the Sumner Select Basketball organization. If opportunity allows, there is potential to have players compete for both brands.
HOW LONG IS THE TRAVEL SEASON?
The Spring season will depend on which team you are on. Some teams will begin practicing early February with games beginning in the middle to late February while other teams will begin practicing in late February with tournaments beginning in March. Our tentative schedule will be delivered with your acceptance letter, via email, and posted to all social media. The dedicated spring/summer season will end in late May through early June. For some teams, the dedicated tournament schedule will end earlier due to other sporting or family obligations. Reminder that at your coaches discretion, your season could be extended into July depending on level of commitment from players and parents.
HOW OFTEN DO WE PRACTICE?
We will do our best to schedule at minimum one practice per week. We are hoping to move to a twice per week schedule at the completion of the school / rec league seasons. We will always work ahead to schedule gym time, but the decision to practice is ultimately up to the coach of each individual team. Due to scheduling conflicts, part of our evaluation at the Showcase is to determine which players will also have the ability to play in game environments with limited practice time. What this means is, if we have a situation where we need to divide teams within a class, we will do our best to place players that have a higher skill level on one team, while other teams will be able to practice and have skill development sessions more often. We believe in an all-inclusive program so in the event your team is not practicing, and the gym is available for other teams, we will do our best to accommodate those players wanting to work on their skill development at the same time. Our coaches are committed to coaching not only their team, but being involved with every other team. The foundation of our program has and will continue to be built with inclusion of all teams as one in mind.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Player & Team Fees will be sent out along with your acceptance letter. During the travel season, fees are applied toward program fees, team uniforms, player insurance, facility usage, and dedicated tournaments, etc. The dedicated tournaments played will be 7 for most teams, and 5 for our younger teams. Although we have set a limit on our dedicated tournaments, most teams continue on to play 8-10 and into fall leagues. Our coaches have thoroughly vetted specific tournaments for travel season scheduling using several determining factors such as class age, distance, skill level, and exposure and for this reason all teams will not always play at the same tournaments. Most tournaments are within daily driving distance, however if there is a tournament scheduled which requires travel/hotel accommodations, additional finances necessary will be at the expense of the player. If your team agrees to play additional tournaments, registration fees will be discussed at that time. For all Tennessee Select UA teams, each player will be obligated to attend 3 mandatory UA tournaments which have predetermined dates of April 25 - 26 (Hoover, AL), May 9-10 (Atlanta, GA), and June 19-21 (Hamilton, OH). These dates are not optional, if you have scheduling conflicts or no desire to travel to these destinations, please inform the coaches immediately to remove yourself from the UA roster pool. This does not remove you from joining one of our Sumner Select teams.
When are rosters announced?
Upon the completion of the 2026 Select Showcase, the evaluating coaches will meet to decide on the final rosters for the spring. Players should be on the lookout for their invitation to join our program being mailed directly to their home. The acceptance letter will be addressed to your athlete. Please be sure to read the letter thoroughly as it will have pertinent information regarding the upcoming schedule. Along with sending welcome letters, rosters will be announced via social media.
WHEN IS MY FEE DUE?
Upon receiving your acceptance letter, accepting, and officially joining our program, you will be sent information regarding submittal of your player fee. There will be deadlines for payment or payment arrangements due to the necessity to secure uniforms prior to the first tournament. If you are needing to make several payments toward your player fee, please communicate this without hesitation directly to your coach. Payments can start as early as acceptance and be made throughout the payment period. Our program is committed to the players first and providing an environment of one. All teams within our organization will wear matching jerseys so that in the event a player is needed to be called up to play for an older team, they are ready to go.
WHAT IF I PLAY MULTIPLE SPORTS?
Our program would never discourage playing in multiple sports and we are committed to the development of our players on and off the court. We are seeking travel basketball commitments, however we understand being a SELECT program, we have athletes that are at the top in multiple sports. All teams will consist of no more than 10 players, however the goal is to keep rosters at 8 to maximize on court experience. If you are selected to join a Sumner Select team, and play multiple sports, our invitation will not change as we are committed to you. We ask that you inform us of your other commitments as early as possible because this can be the deciding factor on total number of players per team. When registering for tournaments, coaches will set the number of MUST HAVE players and if we do not reach this number, we will seek an alternate player or ultimately cancel the tournament. As stated in the “Travel Season” section, the commitment to our Tennessee Select rosters is of more importance. Commitments to these rosters are mandatory. If you play other sports, the 3 dates mentioned are non negotiable. There is a lot of planning that will go into Teams, gear, travel, and we expect our commitment to players to be reciprocated with these dates.
WHAT IF I DO NOT MAKE THE TEAM?
We would be happy to accept every player that attends the Showcase, however this is not possible for the type of program we have established. To continue into the future with our brand SELECT, we feel it is necessary to create the best atmosphere for selected players. This is not the end of your career, in fact it might only be the beginning. Coaches have difficult choices to make and are not exempt from mistakes in evaluating players in a short amount of time. Do not give up on your pursuit of basketball if you are not selected to join our program at this time.
In CONCLUSION
Thank you for attending our 2026 Select Showcase. We hope that you enjoy your time with us and look forward to the upcoming season. As you watch our showcase, please take note of a few key habits from players we are looking for: 1. Do you communicate? 2. Are you a good teammate? 3. Can you make your teammates better? 4. Are you giving max effort? 5. Are you coachable? 6. Regardless of talent, is this the right fit for you? At the conclusion of the tryout, we will answer a few questions, however we hope that the above information will be helpful. If you have any further questions, or would like constructive feedback about your tryout today, feel free to reach out to us directly.
